Pupil Portfolios - 2008 - 2009
Monday, 01 June 2009 16:01

Gail recently built a web site as part of her submission for the 'Design Enquiry' course element of Advanced Higher Art & Design.  She chose to tackle 'Graphic Design for Edinburgh Zoo'.

She took an open source site template and heavily modified it, replacing all the images, colour scheme and page proportions.  All the pages of her site are built to comply with the 'xhtml strict' web standard.  Her submission to SQA included a copy of the site burnt on to CD, complete with a label with the same graphics as the site.

Gail used the open source web editor 'Amaya', as well as Inkscape and Gimp to prepare the graphics.

Gail's Advanced Higher Art & Design Edinburgh Zoo site is at http://zoo.folio1.org

Gail's Advanced Higher Graphics portfolio site is at http://gailgibb.folio1.org.

Meghan Giboin - Photographer PDF Print E-mail
Former Pupils - Former Pupils' Portfolios etc.

Meghan left us in 2005, to study photography.  She has taken the time to respond to some questions we put to her...

Your studies so far?

Degree Foundation Photography- 1year Stevenson college
HND Photography- 2 year Stevenson college
PDA Professional Photography- 1 year Stevenson College

The aspects of your courses that you most enjoy, and the less enjoyable things too?

The most enjoyable thing of this course for me was the fact that it is not based around writing.  Colleges tend to lean more towards a more practical side. This suited me perfectly as I have been able to learn a trade over the last four years, with a very hands on approach.  Stevenson College has three fully operating studios, one of which has a drive in, so with all this I was really spoilt, and was able to do what I wanted (let my imagination run wild) building sets for fashion shoots, which is what I am specialising in.
In my third year I was given the opportunity to be the first year to do an exchange programe with a college from Paris for two weeks.  This has to be one of the best things I have been allowed to do, and it has now been added in to the HND programe (and it's all paid for).

We have had to write some critical theory essays and business plans which I cursed doing at the time, but I enjoyed learning about very much.

How highly do you rate the course you've been on, and would you recommend it to a pupil considering the study of photography?

If you want to go in to the commercial side of photography, i.e. editorial, corporate, fashion, advertising, social, portraiture, and weddings, then I would highly reccomend these courses to you.  They are designed to let you see how the industry of commercial photography works.  You are given the best equipment and studios that you will probably every get to use and allowed to grow into the kind of photographer you want to be.  I am not academic at all and colleges are usually seen as an access route to get into universities or for someone trying to get back into education, but I was able to study for four years at my college, gaining skills and confidence I dont think I would have got at a university.  So this was the best choice for me.

What are your plans once you complete your studies?

Because the field I want to go into is Fashion I plan on assisting photographers, to learn the buisness side of the craft a bit more.  I also photograph weddings and I am working with a few small boutiques around Edinburgh just now, and doing some magazine work for 'i-on' and 'The Skinny'.

Meghan's end of year exhibition will be at the Drill Hall, Dalmeny Street, on the 16th of June.

Our former school captain is in the final year of the Product Design course at Glasgow School of Art, but is hoping to secure funding to allow her to do a 'Masters' year.

Sarah has focused her efforts on 'service design'.  You can read more about this at her design blog.  She is a big user of blogs, and has several running in support of individual projects.  Her design blog, however, is where she posts information about her design activities out with the three main projects she currently has running.  She also shares with her readers design related information she's found on the internet, and opinions she holds.

Sarah's design blog is at -
